Natural Beef Baby

I love a good steak.

In an era where food has become our perceived enemy and everyone is concerned with what they put on their plate, it is hard to admit what one does eat at times.

Beef in particular has been a hot topic since doctors discovered the hormones in meat could mess with your brain.

Unfortunately most of the beef that everyone eats has some disturbing levels of chemicals — including dioxin (an industrial waste product and possible carcinogenic) and antibiotics — found in the beef of the massive meat-producing factories our cattle ranches have become.

So when I ran across a company that ONLY uses grass fed and hormone free beef I became a bit excited. The prices were reasonable as well.

Obviously, organic produce is a little more expensive to your regular selection of fruits and vegetables. But coming down with a disorder or disease from hormone saturated beef is not cheap on the wallett as well.

Hormones — such a growth hormone — are given to cows to increase the rate of growth and milk production. While these hormones also occur naturally in humans, many researchers are concerned that excess intake may lead to a higher risk of certain types of cancer.

This is why it is so important to eat as many natural products as we can.

Antibiotics are often added to animal feed to prevent bacterial diseases. There is little evidence, however, that adding buckets of antibiotics does any good — in fact, it may do more harm than anything. Some strains of lethal antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been found in uncooked beef — probably a result of excessive antibiotic use.

The grass fed beef is second to none and is much healthier than the meat served at the popular fast food chains. Buy some and try this recipe I have included.

Asian Barbecued Steak (serves 8)

INGREDIENTS
  • 1/4 cup chili sauce
  • 1/4 cup fish sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dark sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger root
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 2 pounds flank steak

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together chili sauce, fish sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. Set aside a few tablespoons of the mixture for brushing the steaks during grilling. Score flank steak and place in a shallow dish. Pour remaining marinade over the steak, and turn to coat. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 3 hours.
  2. Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat.
  3. Lightly brush the grilling surface with oil. Grill steak 5 minutes per side, or to desired quality, brushing frequently with the reserved marinade mixture.
